The One Predictable Thing About Technology

... Is that it's unpredictable.

Making predictions about anything is a tricky business. It's often fraught with problems and compounded by two factors: too many variables and too many people.

Making predictions in the world of technology is about as rough as it gets. You see a trend, a fad, or a new craze, jump on it, extrapolate, and then go and get it all totally wrong.

As an example, at the turn of the 20th century, it was predicted that passenger air balloon travel pioneered by the likes of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin would be commoditized and become the pre-eminent means of mass transit. In fact, it would be so popular, by the 1980s, people would have their own personal air balloon as their primary method of conveyance.

Obviously, this gaze into the future didn't take into account the airplane, which put an end to that pearl of foresight.

The main problem with looking forward is that people do it in such painfully straight lines, as the previous example demonstrates. The telephone is another useful example; who could have predicted mobile phones at the time Alexander Graham Bell was fussing around with the technological equivalent of paper cups and wet string?

No one could have. Furthermore, how could anyone have predicted that these mobile telephones would one day have cameras built in? Or that you could send written messages on them? You only have to go back 10 years, and such ideas would be derided as foolish drivel.

The future is a curly thing, and in the wonderful world of information technology, the driving force behind much of the confusion is convergence.

Now there's a buzzword if I ever heard one. And this becomes the next big problem with predicting future trends in technology: let's get two really cool gizmos and merge them; people will love it!

Err, no! What drives desire is anyone's guess. What drives need is utility: two very different parts of the brain are being exercised, here, one more than the other!

If something doesn't fulfill a practical purpose, then it's neither use nor ornament.

This future-predicting thing is even harder these days, but in a way, even the most outlandish theory could have its day. Things are changing so quickly that new technologies are emerging literally overnight. And given that people's needs are also changing, evolving, and emerging, who knows?

Going back even further, desire, need call it what you will has a common source. The very engine of change is people, society, lifestyle, and a requirement to manage, re-route and/or if need be, delegate all of this data and information.

The Apple Newton was way ahead of its time. A bunch of clever guys 'n' gals sat in a room and made a remarkable prediction about how people would "consume" data and information, and they were right on the money the only problem being that they were over 10 years early!

Now, people are on the move. People work on the move, hold down long-distance relationships, work with colleagues across time zones, and manage bank accounts in a cafe while drinking a cup of chai.

The only certainty is the same one that has been pontificated upon since time immemorial: things change. Things often come together in intriguing, mysterious, and eminently useful ways.

So here's my prediction: things will never be small enough, big enough, fast enough, cool enough, or cheap enough! Am I wrong?

Playing Online Games

The Internet has changed the way we do many things, its even changed how we play Computer Games. There are several different types of Online Games:

  • Java/Flash Internet based Games.
  • Text based Games.
  • Online Multiplayer Games.

The Java or Flash based Internet Games are quite popular, and there are a number of Sites, such as www.miniclip.com providing Games for Free. Most people only want to play on a Game once, so they could not justify buying it.

There are hundreds of Games to choose from, and you can even play some of the classic 80s Arcade favourites! If you Register for a "my Google" Page, you can even add Pacman, ah Pacman! Just remember not to waste too long playing the Games - Pacman is extremely addictive.

When playing Online Games, you need to Download the correct plug-in for your browser, and because they have a lot of Graphics. If your Internet connection is slow, then it will probably take a long time to load. These Games are normally quite simple, and most are Single Player Games only.

Text based Games are much more simple, than the Java Games, and these are Games, that can be played in Chat rooms or Forums. These can be Role Play Games, which were extremely popular.

Online Multiplayer Games are the very popular Games, that you can buy in your PC stores, that allow you to compete with other people. If you wanted to play against someone before the Internet was so popular, you had to invite your friend over and play with a split screen. On some Games it was possible to have two players competing over a Network, which was quite popular.

Thanks to the Internet, now theres no need to leave your own home, you just connect to the Internet, and you can play your Game against anybody that you want.

We know what youre thinking, how are you going to find people to play with? No, of course it does not matter, you dont know anybody in Zanzibar! You could possibly find someone to play with from there anyway, although we dont know where it is.

You connect, or rather the Game connects to a server. The other players will also connect to this server, and so it is very easy for you to find people to play against. Wherever you are in the World, at whatever time it is, youre bound to find somebody to play against! Thats the beauty of the Internet, its Worldwide. If you just cant sleep, then you can still battle against someone, and it will be a decent hour in somebodys time zone!

Quake, Counter Strike, WarCraft, and Half Life, are the biggest titles in the Online Multiplayer Game market. A number of the instant messaging clients also come bundled with their own (all be it basic) Games, that you can play with your friends. These are quite interesting, as its very easy to quickly play a Game with somebody, that youre currently talking to.

If you want to play Games to make money, then the Internet can still help you! There are a number of Online Gambling Sites, which could suit your needs.

Mythic Warhammer Online Review

The preview weekend is over so I thought I would share my thoughts on the new game. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will be going live on September 18th and there is quite a buzz going for this game.

I think the game is going to be a serious contender in the MMORPG market. I think it is going to hurt WoW the most because of the similar play styles and graphics, plus WoW has the biggest fan base to hit. The other smaller and older ones like Everquest 2, LOTRO, Vanguard, etc will also be hit hard.

From my play experience, I would describe Warhammer Online as Dark Age of Camelot 2. They are both produced by Mythic and have the same RvR flavor. The evolution of the game is what sets it apart. Mythic has watched and learned and taken the MMO experience in the right direction. They are trying to give subscribers that RvR flavor of DAoC but blend it in to the game so we can RvR as much or as little as we want.

I believe you could level up from 1 to 40 (the current level cap) solely by killing other players and completing RvR quests. Each tier has scenarios that are basically population-controlled instances with a timer and objective. Get in, kill the bad guys and get the points. You can't help but collect renown points when you are in a scenario. There are also contested areas in each tier for open RvR as well as keep taking and defending. These areas are level restricted so level 40s can't come in and help (or they get turned in to a chicken). These areas have quests and objectives that make the area interesting and make leveling there an option.

Overall, I think Warhammer Online is the next best thing - the next generation of MMOs. Mythic has looked and learned and put what they saw to good use. See ya in game!
