In 1980 the MRE was developed and became the primary ration for the US military. The MRE is a complete ready to eat meal. Inside each MRE bag is an entree with other food and drinks. MRE's come packaged with 12 per case. There are six different menus twice per case.

There are 24 different MRE menus. Four of the meals changed in 2006. The new meals are:

Penne Pasta dish

Chicken Fajitas with tortillas

Sloppy Joe Sauce

Cheese Omelet breakfast meal

The MRE is ready to eat and you do not have to cook or heat it. You can boil them, put them in the microwave or use any heat source. Flame-less MRE heaters will heat your meal over 200 degrees just by adding water. This uses a safe chemical reaction with water to heat your MRE.

MRE shelf life has been determined solely on taste tests. An average MRE will last 10 years but the quality and taste of the food will last long after its official expiration date.

You can purchase MRE's in bulk and wholesale MRE's in bulk that will supply you for ten years or longer.

Freeze dried foods are the second best food source to use in any emergency. You just need to add water, wait 10 minutes then eat. Air dried foods and dehydrated foods are a good choice but they do require a little cooking to rehydrate them. Dehydrated applesauce granules and potato granules, however, make an instant meal by adding water.
