Sometimes the first things to go far the things they need the least or things they are bored with and you can usually get a very good price.

The other possibility is looking at online auctions and seeing if you can get a used GameBoy micro that will literally save you hundreds of dollars especially if you are getting a package deal that contains games that you are picking up for only a few bucks a piece.
